Chapter 6

Units for Length, Mass and Volume of Liquid

Learn which unit to use for length, mass and volume of liquid.

Measuring things

We use special units to measure. Each thing has its own unit.

  • Length (how long): centimetre (cm) and metre (m).
  • Mass (how heavy): kilogram (kg).
  • Volume of liquid (how much water): litre.

Key idea

Small things use small units. A pencil is measured in cm. A room is measured in m.

Picking the right unit

Worked example

A bag of rice is heavy. We measure how heavy it is in kg. A bottle of water is measured in litre.

Remember

  • Length → cm or m.
  • Mass → kg.
  • Volume of liquid → litre.
