Chapter 4

Using Our Five Senses

We use five senses to learn about the world: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, using our eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin.

Our Five Senses

We have five senses that help us learn about things around us. Each sense uses a part of our body.

  • Sight uses our eyes to see colours and shapes.
  • Hearing uses our ears to hear sounds.
  • Smell uses our nose to smell things.
  • Taste uses our tongue to taste food.
  • Touch uses our skin to feel if things are hot, cold, soft or hard.

Key idea

Eyes see, ears hear, nose smells, tongue tastes, and skin feels.

Senses Help Us Every Day

Our senses keep us safe and happy. We see a red light and stop. We hear a friend call us. We smell nice food.

Example

When you eat an orange, your tongue tastes it is sweet and your nose smells it is fresh.
