Chapter 4

Adding Values of Money

Let's add money in ringgit (RM) and sen. Line up neatly and add — easy!

Adding money

Money uses ringgit (RM) and sen. When we buy more than one thing, or when someone gives us extra money, we add to find the total. To add, we join the amounts together. Always add the sen first, then the ringgit.

Key idea

100 sen = RM1. Line up RM under RM and sen under sen before you add, just like a normal sum.

A worked example

Worked example

Aina has RM2.50. Her father gives her RM1.30 more. How much money does she have now?
Add the sen: 50 sen + 30 sen = 80 sen. Add the ringgit: RM2 + RM1 = RM3. Join them together. Answer: RM3.80.

Small amounts

For coins, add the sen: 20 sen + 30 sen = 50 sen. For notes, add the ringgit: RM5 + RM3 = RM8. When two amounts are joined, the total is always bigger than each part.

Remember

  • Line up RM and sen neatly.
  • Add the sen first, then the ringgit.
  • Check: does your answer make sense?
