Chapter 2

Basic Operations

The four basic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — including times tables and sharing equally, with an interactive exercise.

We use four basic operations: +, , × (times) and ÷ (share).

Multiplication is repeated addition: 6 × 7 means seven groups of six, which is 42. Division shares equally: 24 ÷ 6 = 4.

Remember

  • × is repeated addition; ÷ shares into equal groups.
  • Learn your times tables — they make everything faster.
