Chapter 4

Dividing Values of Money

Sharing money equally? Divide to give everyone a fair share.

Dividing money

To share money equally among people, we divide. Division splits a total into equal groups, so it tells us how much each person gets. Everyone must get the same amount.

Key idea

Each share = total money ÷ number of people.

A worked example

Worked example

RM6 is shared equally by 3 children. How much does each child get?
Divide the total by the number of children: RM6 ÷ 3 = RM2. Each child gets RM2. Check: RM2 × 3 = RM6.

Small numbers

RM10 ÷ 2 = RM5. For coins, 80 sen ÷ 4 = 20 sen. Use your times tables backwards to help you divide quickly. Sharing fairly means that no child gets more money than another child.

Remember

  • Divide total ÷ number of shares.
  • Equal shares means the same for everyone.
  • Check: share × number = total.
