Measurement word problems
These problems are little stories about length, mass, or volume. First we read carefully to find the numbers and the unit, like cm, kg, or l. Then we decide what to do and work it out. Use four easy steps to solve them.
Key idea / 要点
1) Understand. 2) Plan (add or take away?). 3) Work it out. 4) Check. Keep the same unit, like cm, kg, or l.
Add or take away?
Some words give us a clue. Words like "altogether", "total", or "more" mean we add. Words like "left", "how much longer", or "how much heavier" mean we take away. Reading the story slowly helps us pick the right one.
Worked example / 例题
Sara has a 9 m rope. She uses 4 m. How much rope is left?
Plan: take away. 9 − 4 = 5. There are 5 m left.
Remember / 记住
- Find the numbers and the unit.
- "Altogether" → add; "left" → take away.
- Write the unit in your answer.
