Chapter 4

Multiplying Values of Money

Buying many of the same thing? Multiply the price to find the total.

Multiplying money

When we buy many of the same item, we multiply the price by how many we buy. Multiplying is a fast way of adding the same amount again and again, so it saves time.

Key idea

Total = price × number of items.

A worked example

Worked example

One eraser costs RM2. How much do 3 erasers cost?
Multiply the price by the number: RM2 × 3 = RM6. This is the same as adding RM2 + RM2 + RM2 = RM6.

Small numbers

RM5 × 2 = RM10. For coins, 20 sen × 4 = 80 sen. Use the times tables you already know, and you will find the total quickly. If you forget a fact, you can always add the price again and again to reach the same total.

Remember

  • Multiply price × quantity.
  • Check with repeated addition.
  • Keep the numbers small and neat.
