Numerals and words
We can write a number two ways. In numerals we use digits, like 305. In words we write it out, like "three hundred and five". Both mean the same amount. We write numerals on price tags and words on cheques, so it is useful to know both ways well.
Key idea
Say the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones. Use "and" after the hundreds. A 0 is not read, but keep it in the digits.
Let's write one
Take 428. There are 4 hundreds, 2 tens and 8 ones. In words it is "four hundred and twenty-eight".
Worked example
Write "six hundred and nine" as a number. Six hundreds is 600, there are 0 tens, and 9 ones. So we write 609, not 69. The 0 in the tens place keeps the 6 in the hundreds place.
