Chapter 4

Animal Reproduction

Some animals lay eggs and some have babies. Meet kittens, puppies, chicks and calves!

How animals have babies

Animals reproduce so there will be more of their own kind. Some animals lay eggs, and some give birth to live young. Baby animals grow up to become adult animals, just like you grow up too. Their parents keep them safe while they are small.

Key idea

Some animals lay eggs (hens, birds, fish, frogs). Some give birth to babies (cats, dogs, cows).

Baby animal names

Baby animals have special names. A baby cat is a kitten, a baby dog is a puppy, a baby hen is a chick, and a baby cow is a calf. Frogs lay their eggs in water, and the eggs hatch into tiny tadpoles that later grow into frogs.

Example

A hen lays eggs. After some time, a chick hatches out of an egg.

Remember
