Chapter 5

Growth of Plants

Watch a tiny seed grow into a big plant! Learn what plants need to grow.

From seed to plant

Most plants begin life as a small seed. When a seed gets what it needs, it starts to grow. First a tiny seedling pops out of the soil. Then it grows into a small plant, and later a big plant with many leaves and flowers.

Key idea

Plants need water, sunlight, air and soil to grow well.

What plants need

The roots take in water from the soil. The leaves use sunlight to make food for the plant. Plants also need air to stay alive. If we water a plant and give it sunlight, it will grow bigger and stronger every day. We can watch it change a little more each week.

Example

Plant a bean seed in soil, water it, and put it near a window. In a few days, a green sprout appears!

Remember

  • Plants grow from seeds.
  • They need water, sunlight, air and soil.
  • Roots take in water; leaves make food.
