Chapter 1

Manipulative Skills

Good hands make good science! Learn how to use and care for science tools the right way.

What are manipulative skills?

Manipulative skills are the skills we use to handle science tools and living things the right way. Good hands make good science! When we are careful, our tools last long and everyone stays safe. We must learn to use each tool for the right job.

Key idea

We must use, clean and keep science tools carefully, and treat living things gently.

Using tools the right way

We use a magnifying glass to see small things, a ruler to measure length, and a measuring cup to measure water. We can pick up tiny objects with forceps. We should also draw what we see neatly and label our drawings so friends can understand them.

Example

After looking at a leaf, you wash the tools and put them back in the right place.

Remember

  • Hold tools carefully; do not throw them.
  • Clean and keep tools after use.
  • Tell the teacher if a tool is broken.
