What is a source of light?
Light helps us see. A source of light is something that makes its own light. When it is dark, a source of light helps us to see things around us.
Sources of light
- The Sun — the biggest natural source of light in the day.
- A lamp or light bulb at home.
- A torch that we carry.
- A fire or a candle flame.
Key idea
The Sun, a lamp, a torch and a fire make their own light. The Moon does NOT make its own light, so it is not a source of light.
The Moon is not a source of light
The Moon looks bright at night, but it does not make its own light. The Moon only shines because sunlight bounces off it. So the Moon is not a source of light. Real sources of light, like the Sun and a lamp, make light by themselves.
