Adding money
Money in Malaysia uses ringgit (RM) and sen. There are 100 sen in RM1. We add money when we buy more than one thing and want to know the total cost. To add money, line up the amounts and add them, just like adding decimals.
Key idea
Add the sen first, then the ringgit. If the sen reach 100, change them into RM1 and carry it over.
Lining up amounts
Keeping the amounts neat helps you avoid mistakes when the numbers get bigger.
- Keep the decimal points in a straight line, one under the other.
- RM2.50 means 2 ringgit and 50 sen.
- Always write RM before the total, and use two digits for the sen.
Worked example
Ali buys a pen for RM2.30 and a ruler for RM1.40. How much does he pay in all?
Add the sen: 30 + 40 = 70 sen. Add the ringgit: 2 + 1 = 3. Total = RM3.70.
