Chapter 5

Division of Time

Learn how seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years fit together.

How we split up time

Time is made of small units. We use seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. A bigger unit is always made of smaller ones.

Key idea

1 minute = 60 seconds · 1 hour = 60 minutes · 1 day = 24 hours · 1 week = 7 days · 1 year = 12 months

Changing units

To change a bigger unit into a smaller unit, we multiply. For example, to change hours into minutes, multiply by 60.

Worked example

How many minutes are there in 2 hours?
1 hour = 60 minutes, so 2 hours = 2 × 60 = 120 minutes.

Remember

  • Half an hour = 30 minutes.
  • A quarter of an hour = 15 minutes.
  • A bigger unit always holds more small parts.
