Chapter 4

Foreign Currencies

Meet the money used in other countries and change ringgit using a simple given rate.

Money around the world

Malaysia uses the ringgit (RM) and sen. Other countries use their own money, called foreign currency.

Key idea

Some currencies: United States → US dollar (USD); Singapore → Singapore dollar; Japan → yen; Thailand → baht.

Changing money

When we travel, we change ringgit into foreign money. A bank tells us how much one unit is worth in ringgit.

Worked example

Suppose 1 US dollar = RM4. How many ringgit for 3 US dollars?
RM4 × 3 = RM12.
Answer: RM12.

Remember

  • Malaysia's money is the ringgit (RM).
  • Foreign money has different names.
  • Use the given rate and multiply.
