Word problems with parts
Some word problems use fractions, decimals or percentages instead of plain whole numbers. Read carefully to see which part of a group is asked, then use the 4 steps: understand, plan, solve and check.
Key idea
To find a fraction or percentage of a number, you often divide then multiply. For example, 1/4 of 12 = 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
Handy facts
These facts help you solve many everyday problems.
- 50% = half, 25% = a quarter, 10% = a tenth.
- Money uses decimals: RM2.50 means 2 ringgit and 50 sen.
- To add or subtract decimals, line up the point.
Worked example
Siti has 12 apples. She gives away 1/4 of them. How many apples does she give away?
Plan: find 1/4 of 12. Solve: 12 ÷ 4 = 3. She gives away 3 apples. Check: 3 × 4 = 12. Correct!
Remember
- Read carefully to see which part is asked.
- Write the number sentence first.
- Check your answer at the end.
