Chapter 2

Mixed Operations of Addition and Subtraction

With only + and −, just work from left to right, one step at a time.

Adding and subtracting together

Sometimes a sum has both + and − signs. When only these two signs are used, just work from left to right, one step at a time.

Key idea

With only + and −, solve from left to right. Do the first two numbers, then use that answer with the next number.

Worked example

Worked example

Work out 100 + 50 − 30.

Step 1: 100 + 50 = 150
Step 2: 150 − 30 = 120

So 100 + 50 − 30 = 120.

Careful with order

Do not jump to the last number first. Always go left to right so you do not make a mistake.

Remember

  • Work from left to right.
  • One step at a time.
  • Use each answer for the next step.
