Chapter 4

Multiplication of Money

Find the total cost when you buy several of the same item by multiplying the price.

Buying many of the same thing

When you buy several of the same item, multiply the price by how many you buy. Multiplying is a quick way to add the same amount many times.

Key idea

Total = price of one × number of items. Keep the same number of sen in your answer (2 places after the point).

Worked example

Worked example

One pencil costs RM2.50. How much do 3 pencils cost?
RM2.50 × 3 = RM7.50 (because 2.50 + 2.50 + 2.50 = 7.50).
Answer: RM7.50.

Sen too

You can multiply sen: 50 sen × 6 = 300 sen = RM3.00.

Remember

  • Total = one price × how many.
  • 100 sen = RM1.
  • Check: does the answer look sensible?
