What is a pie chart?
A pie chart is a circle cut into slices, like a real pie or a pizza. Each slice stands for one part of the data. A bigger slice means a bigger part, and a smaller slice means a smaller part.
Key idea
All the slices together fill the whole circle. Half the circle is ½, and a quarter of the circle is ¼.
Reading a pie chart
Look at the size of each slice to compare the parts. Then use the total to work out how many are in each slice.
Worked example
A pie chart shows the favourite fruit of 20 pupils. Half the circle is apples and a quarter is bananas.
Apples = ½ of 20 = 10 pupils. Bananas = ¼ of 20 = 5 pupils.
Remember
- Bigger slice = bigger part.
- All slices make one whole circle.
- ½ of the pupils is the same as half the circle.
