Taking money away
When we spend money or find how much is left, we subtract. Write the ringgit under ringgit and the sen under sen, then subtract from the right. Line up the decimal point (.) neatly.
Key idea
RM1 = 100 sen. If the top sen are too small, borrow RM1 (100 sen) from the ringgit column first.

Worked example
Aina has RM10.00 and buys a toy for RM4.75. How much is left?
RM10.00 − RM4.75. Borrow: 100 sen − 75 sen = 25 sen; RM9 − RM4 = RM5.
Answer: RM5.25.
Change
Change is the money you get back. Change = money you give − price.
Remember
- Keep the decimal points in a line.
- Subtract sen first, then ringgit.
- Borrow RM1 = 100 sen when you need to.
