Reading a Calendar
A calendar shows the days, weeks and months of a year. Every week has 7 days and every year has 12 months. The days repeat: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Key idea
Months with 31 days: January, March, May, July, August, October, December. Months with 30 days: April, June, September, November. February has 28 days (29 in a leap year).
Finding Days and Dates
To find a later day, count forward from today. To find an earlier day, count backward. We can also use a calendar to find the date of a birthday, a holiday or a school event. The numbers in each row show the dates, and the top of each column shows the day of the week.
Worked example
Today is Monday. What day is it after 2 days? Count on: Monday → Tuesday (1) → Wednesday (2). So it will be Wednesday. In the same way, 3 days before Friday is Tuesday.
Remember
- 1 week = 7 days, 1 year = 12 months.
- February is the shortest month.
- Count forward for later, backward for earlier.
