Chapter 4

Grouping Animals by Diet

Animals can be grouped as herbivores, carnivores or omnivores by the food they eat.

What Animals Eat

Animals need food to live, to grow and to stay healthy. Different animals eat different kinds of food. We can group animals by the kind of food they usually eat. There are three main groups: herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Knowing what an animal eats helps us to care for it and to understand where it lives.

The Three Groups

  • Herbivores eat only plants, such as grass, leaves and fruit. Cows, goats and rabbits are herbivores.
  • Carnivores eat only other animals (meat). Lions, tigers and eagles are carnivores.
  • Omnivores eat both plants and animals. Chickens, bears and people are omnivores.

Key idea / 要点

Herbivore = eats plants. Carnivore = eats animals. Omnivore = eats both plants and animals.

Example / 例子

A rabbit eats carrots and leaves, so it is a herbivore. A tiger eats other animals, so it is a carnivore. A chicken eats grains and worms, so it is an omnivore.
