Why do we eat different foods?
Our body needs many kinds of food to grow and stay well. We put food into groups called classes of food. Each class helps us in its own way.
The main food classes
- Carbohydrates (rice, bread) give us energy.
- Proteins (fish, egg, meat) help us grow.
- Fruits and vegetables give vitamins to keep us healthy.
- We also need a little fat and lots of water.
Key idea
A balanced meal has food from many classes. This gives us energy, helps us grow and keeps us healthy.
Example
A plate with rice, fish and vegetables has energy food, growing food and healthy vitamins together.
Remember
- Eat different foods every day.
