Chapter 9

Machine

Simple machines — levers, pulleys, ramps and wheels — and how they make work easier, with an interactive exercise.

A simple machine makes work easier by helping us push, pull or lift.

Examples: a lever (like a see-saw) lifts loads; a pulley raises things with a rope and wheel; an inclined plane (a ramp) helps us move things up a slope; a wheel and axle helps things roll.

Remember

  • Simple machines: lever, pulley, inclined plane (ramp), wheel and axle.
  • They make work easier, not harder.
