What is number value?
Every digit in a number has a value. The value depends on the digit's place. This is called its digit value. For numbers up to 100 000 the places are: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands.

ten thousands = 10 000 · thousands = 1 000 · hundreds = 100 · tens = 10 · ones = 1. Multiply the digit by its place value.
Finding a digit's value
Look at where the digit sits, then multiply it by that place value. The same digit can be worth very different amounts depending on its place.
Worked example / 例题
In 34 682, the digit 4 is in the thousands place. Its value is 4 × 1 000 = 4 000. The digit 6 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 6 × 100 = 600, and the digit 3 is worth 3 × 10 000 = 30 000.
