Rounding off numbers
Rounding off changes a number to a nearby, tidy number. Look at the digit just to the right of the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, round down (stay the same).
Key idea / 要点
Digit is 0–4 → round down. Digit is 5–9 → round up. All digits after the rounding place become 0.
Rounding to the nearest thousand
Check the hundreds digit to decide whether to round up or down.
Worked example / 例题
Round 3 476 to the nearest thousand. The hundreds digit is 4, which is less than 5, so we round down: 3 476 → 3 000. But 3 600 has a hundreds digit of 6, which is 5 or more, so it rounds up to 4 000.
Remember / 记住
- 5 and above rounds up.
- 4 and below stays the same.
- Exactly halfway (like 6 500) rounds up.
