Chapter 10

Machines

How machines make work easier, and how simple machines combine into bigger ones — with an interactive exercise.

Machines help us do work with less effort.

Simple machines — the lever, pulley, inclined plane, wheel and axle and gear — can be joined together to make bigger machines. A bicycle, for example, uses wheels, gears and levers together.

Remember

  • Machines reduce the effort needed to do work.
  • Simple machines combine to make complex machines (like a bicycle).
