Chapter 1

Scientific Skills

Planning experiments with variables — what to change, keep the same and measure — and making inferences, with an interactive exercise.

When we do an experiment, we think about variables (things that can change).

We decide what to change (one thing only), what to keep the same, and what to measure. From our results we make an inference — a sensible explanation of what we observed.

Remember

  • Change one thing · keep the rest the same · measure the result.
  • An inference explains why something happened.
