Chapter 6

Sound

How sound is made by vibrations and travels to our ears — with an interactive exercise.

Sound is made when something vibrates (shakes quickly back and forth).

Sound travels through the air to our ears, so we can hear. A big vibration makes a loud sound; a small vibration makes a soft sound. Sound cannot travel where there is no material (like empty space).

Remember

  • Sound comes from vibrations.
  • It travels through air (and other materials) to our ears.
