Where did the name come from?
After deciding to build his kingdom, Parameswara rested under a shady tree. He liked the spot very much and asked his men, "What is the name of this tree?"
His men told him it was a Melaka tree (pokok Melaka), a kind of fruit tree that grew by the river.
Naming the kingdom
Parameswara decided to name his new kingdom after that very tree. So the kingdom became known as Melaka. This story shows that place names can come from nature, like plants and trees. Today, Melaka is a famous state in Malaysia, known for its long history.
