Reading a Timeline
A timeline is a line that shows events in the order they happened, from the earliest to the latest. Using a timeline, we can follow the story of the late Ice Age, the ending of that very cold time.
The End of the Cold
The last Ice Age ended about 10,000 years ago. As the Earth slowly became warmer, the huge sheets of ice began to melt. All that melting ice turned back into water and flowed into the sea.
Key idea
Warmer Earth leads to melting ice, then a rising sea, then low land is covered by water, and islands form.
Islands Appear
As the sea rose, it covered the low, dry land of the Sunda Shelf. The high ground that stayed above the water became the islands we see today. This is how many islands around Malaysia were formed.
