Making friends with other lands
Diplomatic relations means the friendly ties between one kingdom and another. The early Malay kingdoms did not live alone — they made friends with powerful lands, especially China and India.
To show friendship, a kingdom sent envoys (special messengers) on long sea voyages. The envoys carried letters and gifts for the foreign ruler. In return they received gifts and a promise of friendship.
Why did they do this?
- To trade safely and sell their goods.
- To gain protection from a strong friend.
- To be respected by big kingdoms.
- To keep peace instead of war.
Kingdoms such as Kedah, Langkasuka and Chih Tu sent missions to China. Chinese records still tell us about these visits today.
