Working with money
In Malaysia we use ringgit (RM) and sen. There are 100 sen in RM 1. We write money with two digits after the point, like RM 3.50 (3 ringgit and 50 sen).
Key idea / 要点
Add and subtract money by lining up the decimal points. To share money equally, divide. To find total cost of many items, multiply.
Change from shopping
Worked example / 例题
A pen costs RM 2.30. You pay with RM 5. How much change?
Change = RM 5.00 − RM 2.30 = RM 2.70.
Check: 2.30 + 2.70 = 5.00. Correct!
Buying many items
If 1 exercise book costs RM 1.50, then 4 books cost 4 × RM 1.50 = RM 6.00. If three friends share a bill of RM 27 equally, each pays RM 27 ÷ 3 = RM 9. Always write two digits after the point when showing money.
Remember / 记住
- RM 1 = 100 sen.
- Line up the decimal points when adding money.
- Change = money paid − total cost.
