Chapter 1

Problem Solving

Turn word stories into number sentences and solve them step by step.

Solving word problems

Word problems tell a story with numbers. Use 4 steps: Understand what is asked, Plan which operation to use, Solve it, then Check. Words like "in total" mean add, "left" or "how many more" mean subtract, "each group" often means multiply or divide.

Key idea / 要点

Read carefully → pick + − × or ÷ → work it out → check that the answer makes sense.

A worked story

Worked example / 例题

A shop has 1 250 books. It sells 480 on Monday and 365 on Tuesday. How many books are left?
Plan: sold in total, then subtract.
Sold = 480 + 365 = 845.
Left = 1 250 − 845 = 405 books.
Check: 405 + 845 = 1 250. Correct!

Sharing equally

If 6 friends share 96 stickers equally, each gets 96 ÷ 6 = 16 stickers.

Remember / 记住

  • Underline the important numbers and the question.
  • Choose the right operation from the clue words.
  • Always check if your answer is sensible.
