Chapter 1

Basic Sewing Techniques

Learn to thread a needle, tie a knot, and make running and back stitches by hand.

Getting Ready to Sew

Hand sewing joins pieces of cloth using a needle and thread. First you must thread the needle. Cut a piece of thread about the length of your arm. Wet one end and pass it through the small hole (the eye) of the needle. Pull the thread through so both sides are even, or leave one side longer.

Next, tie a knot at the end of the thread so the stitch will not slip out. Wind the thread around your fingertip, roll it into a small ball, and pull it tight. Now you are ready to sew.

Two Basic Stitches

A running stitch is the simplest. Push the needle up and down through the cloth in a straight line, making small even gaps. It is quick but not very strong.

A back stitch is stronger. Each new stitch goes back to meet the last one, leaving no gap. Use it for seams that must hold firmly.

Remember

  • Keep stitches small and even.
  • Tie a knot at the start and the end.
  • Back stitch is stronger than running stitch.
  • Take care with the sharp needle.
