Chapter 7

Rusting

What causes iron to rust and how rusting can be prevented — with an interactive exercise.

Rust is the reddish-brown layer that forms on iron and steel.

Iron rusts when it is exposed to both water and air (oxygen). We can prevent rust by keeping iron dry, or by covering it — with paint, oil/grease, or a layer of another metal.

Remember

  • Rusting needs water AND air (oxygen).
  • Prevent it: keep dry, or coat with paint or oil.
