Scientists make a hypothesis — a sensible idea they can test — then control the variables and draw a conclusion from their results.
A hypothesis is a "if… then…" idea, for example: if a plant gets more light, then it will grow taller. After the fair test, the conclusion says whether the results support the hypothesis.
