Islam has shaped the way our country is governed for hundreds of years. It began during the time of the Melaka Sultanate in the 15th century, when the Sultan ruled as both a leader of the country and a leader of Islam.
Islam and the Rulers
In each Malaysian state that has a Ruler, the Sultan or Ruler is the Head of Islam. He looks after mosques, Islamic law and religious matters. For the states without a Ruler, such as Melaka, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territories, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the Head of Islam.
Key idea
In administration, Islam guides values such as honesty, justice and caring for the people. The Ruler protects the religion, and religious officers help run mosques and Islamic courts.
Islamic bodies today
Special departments and councils help manage Islamic affairs. A well-known one is JAKIM (the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia). Syariah courts deal with certain matters for Muslims, such as marriage.
