What powers does the Agong have?
As Head of State, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong holds important powers. He uses them according to the Federal Constitution and usually acts on the advice of the government.
His main powers
- He is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces (the army, navy and air force).
- He is the Head of Islam in his own state, Melaka, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territories.
- He appoints the Prime Minister from the leader who has the support of Parliament.
- He gives his royal assent (agreement) so that laws can be passed.
- He can dissolve Parliament before a general election.
Key idea
The Agong also has the special power to grant a pardon to people who have been punished. He guards the special position of the Malays and the rights of all Malaysians.
