The night of 30 August 1957
Just before midnight, a huge crowd gathered at the Padang in Kuala Lumpur. At midnight, the British Union Jack was lowered and the flag of Malaya was raised. The people had waited a long time for this moment.
The Proclamation of Independence
On the morning of 31 August 1957, at Stadium Merdeka, Tunku Abdul Rahman read the Proclamation of Independence. He then raised his hand and led the crowd in shouting "Merdeka!" seven times. Malaya was finally free.
