The name Jalur Gemilang
Our national flag has a special name: Jalur Gemilang, which means Stripes of Glory. This name was given by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on 31 August 1997, during the 40th year of independence.
Its stripes and colours
The flag has 14 stripes — 7 red and 7 white — side by side. The four colours of the flag are red, white, blue and yellow. In the top corner is a blue rectangle with a yellow crescent and a yellow 14-pointed star.
Key idea
Jalur Gemilang = Stripes of Glory. The 14 stripes stand for the 13 states and the federal government.
