How Islam came to Melaka
The Melaka Sultanate was founded around 1400 by Parameswara. Melaka grew into a busy trading port where merchants from many lands met. Some of these traders came from Arabia, India and China, and among them were Muslim traders who brought the religion of Islam.
A ruler becomes Muslim
Parameswara himself embraced Islam and took the Muslim name Megat Iskandar Shah. When the ruler became Muslim, many people in Melaka followed. Later sultans, such as Sultan Mansur Shah, helped Islam grow even more.
Melaka soon became a great centre of Islam in the Malay world. From Melaka, the religion spread to other places through trade, marriage and teachers. Islam also shaped the Malay language, customs and way of life.
