Long ago, Melaka was a rich and busy trading port. Its wealth and its location made foreign powers want to control it. This challenged the sovereignty (freedom to rule) of our land.
The Portuguese arrive
In 1511, the Portuguese, led by Alfonso de Albuquerque, attacked and captured Melaka. This was the first time a foreign European power took over the great trading city. The Portuguese built a strong fort called the A Famosa.

The Dutch and the British
In 1641, the Dutch defeated the Portuguese and took Melaka. Later, the British gained control of Melaka too. Each foreign power wanted Melaka for its riches and trade. Their coming challenged the sovereignty of the Malay states.
