Chapter 1

The King and the Government

See how the King reigns and the government rules under our Constitution.

A King and a government together

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy. This means we have a King (the Yang di-Pertuan Agong) and also a government led by the Prime Minister. The King reigns as Head of State, while the government rules the country by making everyday decisions. They work together under the rules of the Federal Constitution, the highest law of the land.

The three parts of government

Our government has three parts that share the work:

  • Legislature (Parliament) — makes the laws.
  • Executive (Cabinet) — carries out the laws, led by the Prime Minister.
  • Judiciary (courts) — decides if the laws are followed.

The Agong gives his agreement to new laws, but he acts on the advice of the government. This keeps our country fair and orderly.

Key idea

The King reigns and the government rules — together they run the country under the Federal Constitution.
