Who is our sovereign King?

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the King of Malaysia and the country's Head of State. He is chosen from the nine Malay Rulers by the Conference of Rulers and reigns for a term of five years. The word sovereign (daulat) means he holds the highest position of honour in the nation.

What does the Agong do?

The Agong is a symbol of unity for all Malaysians. He is the Supreme Head of the Armed Forces and the Head of the religion of Islam in his own state and in the states without a Ruler. He opens Parliament, gives his agreement to new laws, and appoints the Prime Minister. Although he acts on the advice of the government, we all respect and honour him.
