Chapter 1

Electromechanical Product Design

Discover how electrical and mechanical parts team up to make products that move and work.

What is an electromechanical product?

An electromechanical product is a useful thing that puts electrical parts and mechanical parts together so it can work. The electrical parts, such as a battery, wires and a switch, carry electricity. The mechanical parts, such as gears, wheels and levers, help things move. A tiny motor is the special part that changes electrical energy into movement.

Key idea

Electrical energy + moving mechanical parts = an electromechanical product that does a job for us.

Everyday examples

Many things at home are electromechanical. An electric fan uses a motor to spin its blades. A toy car uses a battery and motor to move its wheels. A hair dryer and a blender work the same way.

Example

In a battery toy car, the battery gives power, the switch turns it on, the motor spins, and gears pass the movement to the wheels.

Designing one safely

Follow the design process: identify the problem, gather ideas, draw a sketch, make a prototype, test it, then improve it. Always wear personal protective equipment such as safety goggles and work carefully with tools in the workshop.
