Chapter 3

Microorganisms

The tiny living things around us — bacteria, fungi and viruses — and how some help while others harm, with an interactive exercise.

Microorganisms are living things too small to see without a microscope — such as bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Some are useful: yeast (a fungus) makes bread rise, and bacteria help make yoghurt. Some are harmful: they can cause disease or make food go bad.

Remember

  • Microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, viruses — seen with a microscope.
  • Some are useful (yeast, yoghurt); some cause disease or spoil food.
