Chapter 12

Stability and Strength

What makes a structure stable and strong — base, shape and materials — with an interactive exercise.

Stability means how well an object stays upright without toppling. Strength means how well a structure holds a load without breaking.

An object is more stable when it has a wide, low base (like a pyramid). A structure is made stronger by using strong shapes (such as the triangle) and suitable materials.

Remember

  • A wide, low base makes an object more stable.
  • Triangles are strong shapes used in bridges and towers.
