Stability and Strength of Objects and Structures

What is stability?

An object is stable when it does not topple over easily. Some things stand firm while others fall over with a small push. The shape of an object decides how stable it is.

An object is more stable when it has a wide base and is heavier at the bottom (a low centre of gravity).

A short, wide object is more stable than a tall, thin one. That is why a tall, narrow tower topples more easily, and why a table lamp with a heavy base is hard to knock over.

What is strength?

Strength is how much load a structure can carry without breaking or bending too much. Engineers build strong bridges and buildings so they can hold heavy weights safely.
