Symbols of each state
Malaysia has 13 states, and each one has its own flag (bendera), anthem (lagu negeri) and crest (jata). These are special symbols. They show the identity, history and pride of the people who live in that state.
What the symbols mean
- A state flag uses colours and shapes with meaning. A crescent and star often stand for Islam and the ruler, while colours may stand for the Sultan, the people or the land.
- A state anthem is a song of loyalty sung at official events, such as when the Sultan or Yang di-Pertua Negeri arrives.
- A state crest is like a badge. It may show a royal weapon, plants, animals or a motto.
Key idea
The Jalur Gemilang and Negaraku belong to the whole country, but each state also keeps its own flag, anthem and crest to show its special identity.
